INDORE EV CHARGER ACCIDENT CLAIMS 8 LIVES
In a bizarre but devastating fire accident in Indore in the wee hours of Wednesday, 18th March, at least 8 people were killed in their beds by a deadly fire /explosion caused by an EV charging mishap. “The fire broke out in a three-storey house in Tilak Nagar area of Madhya Pradesh's Indore in the early hours of Wednesday,” officials said.
According to initial findings, an electric car was left plugged in for overnight charging outside the residence of the Pugalia family. Around 4:00 am, a suspected electrical fault led to an explosion at the charging point, setting the vehicle on fire. The flames quickly spread from the car into the three-storey building, trapping those inside and leaving little time to react.
The situation escalated further due to the presence of multiple LPG cylinders stored inside the house. As the fire intensified, several cylinders exploded in quick succession, causing structural damage and partial collapse of the building. The powerful blasts and dense smoke turned the home into a death trap.
With a surge in EV (electric vehicle) adoption, vehicle owners are turning to home charging setups using standard household plugs (15A) rather than designated charging stations.
This practice is generally considered safe and is approved by the manufacturers. However, safety importantly depends on the home's electrical setup more than the vehicle.
Taking to X, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said, "Deeply pained by the loss of lives in a fire mishap in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured."
"An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50, 000, " it added.
Proper wiring, earthing, dedicated circuits, MCB/RCCB protection, and certified chargers are essential for safe overnight charging, but the devil in the details of EV charging safety devoured the victims. This also, sadly, remains the story of escape safety protocols for all kinds of enclosed spaces where even posh and expensive apartments, factories, malls and the like still don’t have proper fire extinguishing equipment, alarms, sprinklers, emergency lights, photoluminescent signages and essentials mandated by the NBC no less.
